Internet2 Governance: AOAC Update

Over the past month, the Architecture and Operations Advisory Council (AOAC) has been working to implement a pilot program that would allow 10gig connectors to request unallocated Internet2 backbone waves. Although each segment of the Internet2 backbone currently contains ten-10 gigabit waves, differential use across the backbone has led to segments with unused capacity in some areas of the country.

To solicit community input on this issue, the AOAC held two conference calls with network members and connectors to discuss possible solutions and procedures that would support requests for use of these waves. As a result of these discussions, the AOAC announced the pilot service. All network members and connectors are invited to submit proposals for the waves, although the AOAC approved the pilot to begin with 10gig connectors. To request more information or a wave request submission form, please contact waveco@internet2.edu. Public agendas and summaries of AOAC meetings are available online if you would like more information.
