<> Information Sharing Guidelines
Periodically members are interested in sharing information about
special activities or opportunities with the Internet2 community
such as technology symposiums, workshops, donation programs,
product offerings and or grant opportunities. In an effort to
facilitate information sharing we are adding a Member-to-Member
section to this monthly update. Members interested in contributing
notices should review the guidelines at http://www.internet2.edu/members/html/informationsharing.html
and email <evaughan@internet2.edu> with proposed announcements.
<> Internet2 K20 Initiative Update
+ CENIC Named SEGP of the Month
Cyberstep's English for All (EFA) project is part of a new multimedia
learning system created expressly for adults who want to learn
English. The program includes five compelling, real-life stories
in twenty, fifteen-minute episodes. Each episode features a
multi-ethnic cast and a friendly Wizard, who explains language
and skill content throughout each story. The content is based
on the California ESL standards and skill areas identified in
the Latino Adult Education Services Project and is correlated
to CASAS and SCANS competencies. The English For All video is
digitized at a high frame rate so that learners can see mouth
formation and important body language. For the full article
on this project, please visit the Internet2 K20 website: http://k20.internet2.edu/segp/index.shtml
<> Applications Update
Excerpts from the applications newsletter are below, for the
complete applications newsletter go to: http://apps.internet2.edu/html/newsletter.html
+ Internet2 Commons Site Coordinator Training
Training for Commons site coordinators will be held October
30-31, following the Fall 2002 Member Meeting in Los Angeles,
CA. The training will be co-sponsored by Internet2 and CENIC.

<> International Update
+ Slovakia (SANET) and Internet2 Sign Memorandum of Understanding
SANET, Slovakia's academic network, and Internet2 have recently
signed a Memorandum of Understanding. SANET interconnects academic
and research institutions and universities in Slovakia. SANET
an independent civil association, not-for-profit organization,
also manages Slovakia's link to the pan-European GEANT network
at 100 Mbps. SANET is also leading SANET2, a project to build
up a gigabit network for the Slovak academic and research community
with the connection to a trans-european gigabit network and
global Internet.
Internet2 has formed peer-level relationships with organizations
outside the U.S. who have projects similar to Internet2 in scope
and objectives. SANET joins over 45 international organizations
and networks that together with Internet2 are working towards
ensuring continued global interoperability of advanced networking
and enabling collaboration between U.S. researchers, faculty,
students and their overseas counterparts. For more information
about SANET: http://www.sanet.sk/en/index.shtm
+ International Task Force Events during Fall Member Meeting
International presentations and updates from both Internet2
International Partners and Internet2 members are planned for
the Fall Member Meeting taking place 27-30 October in Los Angeles,
California. Please see the fall meeting program website for
the dates and times of the International Task Force Meeting
and International Collaboration Updates. http://www.internet2.edu/activities/html/fall_02_schedule.html
<> Middleware Update
+ Shibboleth
Shibboleth facilitates inter-institutional sharing of web resources
subject to access controls. Alpha code version 2.5 has been
released and beta is expected in September. The Shibboleth pilot
sites are preparing for deployment and testing of the Shibboleth
beta code. Content providers working with institutions in the
beta pilot are EBSCO Publishing, Online Computer Library Center,
Inc. (OCLC), SFX, and others. The release of production code
is scheduled for October. Project updates are maintained at:
http://middleware.internet2.edu/shibboleth/
+ Web Initial Sign-On (WebISO)
WebISO is an essential component for the campus middleware function.
Pubcookie, WebISO software, is one of the components included
in the NMI deliverables. Other similar software options are
being reviewed. Pubcookie 3.0.0 Beta 1 is now available. This
is a beta-test release comprising new login server and Apache
module components. Interested parties are encouraged to deploy
this version in test and pilot environments and to provide feedback
to the Pubcookie team. A final 3.0 version is expected to be
released sometime in September.
Please see the newly redesigned Pubcookie web site for information
about the package and the project, including download, development,
and mailing list info: http://www.washington.edu/pubcookie/
+ National Science Foundation Middleware Initiative (NMI)
The NMI teams are developing the deliverables for Release 2
scheduled for October 25, 2002. "Middleware: The New Frontier",
an article written by Alan Blatecky, Ann West, and Mary Spada,
was published in the July/August 2002 edition of the EDUCAUSE
Review. The article can be viewed at: http://www.educause.edu/pub/er/erm02/erm024w.asp
NSF Middleware Initiative Release 1.1 (NMI-R1.1) was issued
on August 28, 2002, including a security patch necessitated
by vulnerabilities found in OpenSSL. This NMI update includes
the latest OpenSSL version (0.9.6g) from http://www.openssl.org/source/.
See CERT Advisory CA-2002-23 at http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2002-23.html
for details of OpenSSL's vulnerability prior to version 0.9.6g.
If you previously installed NMI-R1.0, we strongly suggest that
you download and use NMI-R1.1 instead.
The NMI-R1.1 update is at http://www.nsf-middleware.org/NMIR1/download.htm.
For help, please send mail to: nmi-support@nsf-middleware.org.
Additional NMI information is available from the following
sites:

+ Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)
Based on the success of the first PKI Research Conference last
April, NIST and NIH agreed to co-sponsor with Internet2 a second
research conference. The conference is currently planned for
Spring 2003.
+ Digital Rights Management (DRM) Workshop
A DRM workshop, endorsed by CNI, EDUCAUSE, Internet2, SURA,
ViDe, and funded by an NMI Award, will be held in early September.
The workshop will explore emerging middleware, particularly
directory issues and the role they may play as a foundation
for DRM in research and education. See the workshop web site
for more information: http://www.ait.utk.edu/drmworkshop/
+ Advanced CAMP Presentations
The presentations from Advanced CAMP, held in Boulder, Colorado,
July 31st to August 2nd, are now available at: http://www.nmi-edit.org/news/adcamp.html
+ Directories
The Directories working group is reviewing feedback from the
NMI testbeds sites on the directory object classes and other
NMI R1 deliverables. This input will be incorporated in subsequent
versions. Work continues on new deliverables for R2 including
LDAP Analyzer Software and a Groups Implementer's Guide. For
more information see: http://middleware.internet2.edu/dir/
<> End-to-End Performance Initiative (E2Epi)
+ End-to-End Performance Initiative Performance Environment
System
The "E2E piPEline: End-to-End Performance Initiative Performance
Environment System Architecture" white paper is now available.
This white paper was prepared under the direction of Eric Boyd,
E2E Performance Engineer. The paper outlines the plans for a
distributed, scalable system to test, monitor, and report end-to-end
performance and will be able to indicate performance capabilities
and locate performance problems along the path between two computers
connected by the Abilene network, participating campuses, regional
networks, and gigaPoPs. This "pipeline" will enable
advanced Internet applications to operate at peak performance
and thus advancing the productivity of academic researchers.
