<> International Update
+ Abilene establishes 10 Gbps optical connection to StarLight
Abilene, an Internet2 backbone network has recently established
a 10 Gbps optical link to StarLight. StarLight, funded by
the National Science Foundation, is a Chicago-based advanced
optical infrastructure and proving ground for international
network services. This link will enable Abilene participating
institutions to leverage high-performance research and education
networks around the world that also connect to StarLight.
This includes -- among many other advanced research and education
networks -- the new CA*net4 network of CANARIE (Canada) using
both IPv4 and native IPv6. http://archives.internet2.edu/guest/archives/I2-NEWS/log200209/msg00006.html
+ 10 Gbps connection from US to Europe for Research and Education
The first trans-Atlantic 10 gigabit per second wavelength
circuit dedicated to research and education from the US to
Europe was inaugurated at iGrid2002, the biennial International
Grid applications-driven testbed event held 23-26 September
in Amsterdam. The connection is provided as part of a long-term
commitment by Tyco Telecommunications to the research networking
community through an agreement with the non-profit organization
IEEAF. Internet2 and SURFnet, the Dutch national research
network and hosts of iGrid2002, have put the 10gbps circuit
into operation between their networks in New York and Amsterdam.
Work is underway to connect the circuit to the broader European
networking community as well. iGrid2002 showcased how extreme
networks, combined with application advancements and middleware
innovations, can advance scientific research.
