Internet2 2005 Member Assessment Survey

Our campus or organization’s end-to-end performance is limited by our ability to upgrade our campus/organization network or deploy advanced networking technologies.

  • We have had multicast enabled everywhere on campus for years, but our next step is to enable IPv6 which requires an upgrade to our core network which has not yet been funded.
  • [Our GigaPoP] appears to be having difficulty identifying a provider of gigabit (2.5 G wave?) capacity to [our university] in support of a grant
  • The inability to provide I2 connection throughout the campus has been a main factor in departments not using I2.
  • We are just passing mid life with our gigabit backbone. Upgrading to a 10 gigabit backbone will have to wait for two years until funding is adequately built up.
  • Edge gear is a moving target. Jumbo frames and gig-E add a bunch of cost by pushing close to the edge of technology.
  • Example - TCP window size tuning. We know how to do it; we don't know who needs it.
  • Many locations on campus still have CAT3 cable limiting those buildings to 10Mps connections.
