Internet2 2005 Member Assessment Survey

Campus/organization security concerns are overriding our ability to utilize our Abilene connection to its fullest capability.

  • The university has decided to NOT install firewalls at the perimeter of the network.
  • Firewalls impede performance. The highest performance apps have to be connected through an unprotected portion of the campus network in order to achieve maximum performance.
  • Firewalls without jumbo frame support are preventing our researchers from fully utilizing our Abilene connection.
  • Security takes a lot of time that could be otherwise used.
  • While security concerns are important, security risks are not deterring our use of Internet2
  • Cannot upgrade to more advanced TCP kernels, can't deploy NDT, can't employ Web100/Net100
  • Misguided attempts to have the network try/pretend to protect poorly managed devices reduces the usability of the network for all, even those with well managed devices.
  • A major problem as mentioned previously
  • We have had some issues regarding firewall and intrusion prevention equipment impeding traffic from our physics grid computing system. The traffic from the grid computing system appears for the most part to be a form of peer-to-peer traffic and some of the security equipment has not dealt with it correctly.
  • Extensive filters necessary for security get in the way of high-speed connections.
