Internet2 2005 Member Assessment Survey

Member Assessment Survey – Summary of Results

Responses to Sub-survey on Member Communications

Approximately 31 respondents chose to complete the sub-survey on member communications. Please note, the main survey also included several questions about communications. Because a smaller group of respondents completed this sub-survey, the answers to some of the same, or similar, questions are slightly different.

Respondents to the sub-survey on member communications reported feeling reasonably well informed about most Internet2 activities, with the exception of the Security Initiative, and reported that email messages and e-newsletters from Internet2 staff were the most often used means of finding out about those activities, as shown in the following charts.

Value of Internet2 membership

Respondents were asked what Internet2 could do to help communicate the value of Internet2 membership. Responses to this question are included here:

What could Internet2 do to help you communicate the value of Internet2 membership to your organization?

  • Research grant information and connections to corporate members with specific suggestions
  • Help translate the benefits so that the non-research community can understand and see the implications for them (state universities, community colleges, K12 schools, libraries, museums, government/policy leaders)--I try, but I could sure use some help (in other words, lay language and explanations)
  • National I2 Days
  • Strongly encourage official campus representatives to reach out to organizations and researchers on campus to "get the word out."
  • Provide more information on the how the organization is connection to I2 and what we can do improve our connection.
  • Positive communications with university presidents/provosts/CEOs/CFOs at their respective national conferences.
  • Better, clearer marketing and communications.

96.7% of respondents reported that they would be interested in knowing how other Internet2 members use their connections to Internet2. 56.7% of respondents indicated a willingness to verbally share with others how they are using their connection to Internet2, such as in a side meeting during and Internet2 Member Meeting. Another 6.7% reported they would be willing to share this information in a written report to be posted on the Internet2 Web site; the rest (36.7%) would not be willing to share this information.

Internet2 email newsletters

77.4% of respondents reported receiving the Internet2 email newsletters, and all but one of these respondents reported reading them. 91.7% reported the information to be useful, primarily to stay informed and updated.
