Internet2 2005 Member Assessment Survey

What could Internet2 do to help communicate the value of Internet2 membership more broadly within your organization?

  • With concrete information on how it assists in research and in obtaining grant funding
  • I'd like to think more about that. What we're not interested in is Internet2 making an ad hoc decision about marketing within our network. We would very much want to collaborate on this.
  • Hold more National I2 Days. Provide demos of projects, maybe highlighting certain areas (e.g. K-12, humanities, ....)
  • We should schedule an I2 day in the near future.
  • News of specific research interest.
  • Make all past resources available and case studies.
  • Promotional material
  • [We have] a large state. We are still struggling with I2 connectivity. Many state and k-12 education leaders do not understand the need or value of connecting to I2. There is a direct correlation between our current state of connectivity and the recommendation in the National Ed Tech Plan for all schools to have broadband access. Majority of the 700 small schools in [our state] (less than 1500) students only have T1 access.
  • Show linkage of university functions to national works.
  • Keep reaching the CIOs and Provosts describing the value of Internet2 participation
  • Seminars/ sessions direct to our researchers
  • Security, networking technical solutions that are more "local" and regional.
  • Provide talking points
  • Possibly schedule conference calls with each corporate member.
  • Internet2 should do more work to promote itself within disciplinary venues, e.g., Physics conferences, rather than us trying to sell it internally.
  • Provide a semi-annual report indicating the value received from corporate membership in general and [each corporation]'s membership specifically - other than just funding. Include possible collaborative opportunities.
  • Currently, the large majority of the higher administration of [our university] has a non-technical/scientific background - our current president is a lawyer - it is therefore somewhat difficult to convey the importance of Internet2 to this administration, in particular with respect to the cost benefits of this very expensive infrastructure project - sitting in the middle of nowhere does not help in this respect. If we could organize some meetings with peers who could convey the impact of Internet2 on their organizations, while keeping the perspective on non-technical/non-scientific issues, this could be of help to promote the value of Internet2 to our institution.
  • Communications to the higher level administration of the advantages and practical utility of I2. This could be done several ways, including I2 participation/presentations at national conferences for CEOs, University Presidents, Provosts, direct mailings (not "spam" but targeted letters), etc.
  • 1) Meet with the primary executives responsible for I2 in focus groups to find out what we need, to tell us what you are working on, and to keep us engaged. There is a group in Educause of 20 people who are working on what Educause needs to keep attracting members; what kind of meetings, what kind of publications, etc. I2 could set up something similar.
  • Historically, I2's emphasis has been on the value of the network as a high-capacity, high-speed transport vehicle designed to facilitate advance research and support advanced applications. This is important and should not be diminished, but more comparable emphasis on the value of more broadly applicable services such as middleware, end-2-end performance, the Quilt, etc. would help demonstrate the considerable benefit of I2 participation to the larger education community that may not be as intensely focused on research.
  • More discipline-specific collaboration. It's more effective for, say, a meteorologist to hear thru her/his professional organization(s) about how I2 can help than from someone like me in the central IT organization.
  • Help me show how similar institutions have benefited in their research collaborations.
  • I take responsibility for communicating all that comes to me of importance to faculty, students, staff, and corporate partners (e.g. Caterpillar, start-up and spin-off companies as appropriate. On occasions when I have forwarded information without some explanation or comment, it has led individuals to call Internet2 making requests, and in one case members of one of our W/LAN institutions perhaps unnecessarily contacting Internet2 Staff and trying to make a case for self-standing Internet2 membership—even claiming naively of having clout with Internet2 Staff.
  • How about producing something akin to the "52 reasons" (or was it 50 or 51) that NSFNet did?
  • Be less technical, shorter (succinct, concise). Bring out the important wins for I2 in a format easily digested and readily dispersable.
  • Promoting events that would be of interest to students as a way to encourage faculty to use I2
  • Emailings about news/events have been good and they can then be forwarded within our institution.
  • There needs to be a clarification of the difference between the network (Abilene) and the organization (Internet2). Most people confuse the two and speak about Internet2 as if it's the network itself. Any message sent to universities should be unambiguous from the outset. That would be VERY helpful.
