Frequently Asked Questions about Collaboration Site Status
Q. Which Internet2 membership categories need to apply for
collaboration site status if a connection to a high performance
network is desired?
A. Affiliate Members and Corporate members need to apply
for collaboration site status.
Q. As a Collaboration Site participating in Abilene, what
are my annual membership dues and fees?
A. You would be required to pay the $28,500 annual membership
dues to Internet2, the $21,000 Participation Fee for Abilene,
and some portion of the annual fee to establish a connection
to Abilene. Note that
the Abilene connection fee is usually shared among several
sites, who connect through a gigaPoP.
Q.There are two separate research laboratories in my company
(or government agency), one on the East Coast and one in the
West, that wish to participate in Abilene. Must each one apply
to become a Collaboration Site?
A.Yes, each one must apply to become a Collaboration Site.
Internet2 dues at the $28,500 level for your company or agency
cover the first collaboration site, but each additional site
must also pay annual Internet2 dues of $28,500, and all sites
must pay appropriate participation fees for specific projects
such as Abilene.
Q. If a research laboratory in my company (or government
agency) becomes a Collaboration Site and then an Abilene Participant,
will other parts of the company have access to Abilene?
A. No; only the laboratory will have access. You will be
asked to identify the "eligible" IP addresses for
that single laboratory.
Q.If our research laboratory becomes a Collaboration Site
and meets the requirements to participate in Abilene, how
will our site be treated with regard to the Abilene Conditions
of Use?
A.Collaboration Sites are treated as Primary Participants
by the Abilene Conditions of Use. Please refer to that document
at
http://abilene.internet2.edu/policies/cou.html
Q.The research laboratory in my company wishes to use the
high speed Abilene connection to communicate with one of our
other research laboratories in a different part of the country.
May we become a Collaboration Site simply to make this possible?
A. No. The purpose of Internet2 and the Abilene network is
to serve the teaching, learning, research, and clinical missions
of higher education, and proprietary and commercial traffic
(along with classified and illegal traffic) is not permitted.
While within the Abilene network, Collaboration Sites are
treated as Primary Participants and may exchange with other
Collaboration Sites, it is expected that participation in
Abilene will primarily be for the purposes of communicating
and collaborating with Internet2 Regular Member universities.
